22 Mar 2019 by David steel

The finals of the Scottish Athletics Indoor League (SAIL) took place at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow over the weekend with the SAIL relay finals also taking place on the same day and DTFC were at the forefront in both competitions.

The SAIL relay qualification was first on the timetable and with only the fastest six teams making the final it was going to be tough to qualify with as many as six heats in some age groups. After all the heats were completed DTFC had four teams in their respective finals with both U13 and U15 boys and girls A teams being successful.

The U13 girls took pride of place in the finals by running a blistering 1.55mins and finishing nearly one second ahead of Giffnock North whilst creating a new club record by almost two seconds. The quartet of Aaliya Adebisi, Sophie Thomas,Kirstin Penman and Shayna Asamoah were only fourth fastest in qualifying but defied the odds to take the gold.

The U15 girls were also making the podium in their relay final. Their quartet of Rachel Robertson, Hayley Penman ,Darcie Black and Rebecca Grieve grabbed a bronze with a solid run of 1.51mins finishing 3 seconds behind the winners Edinburgh AC A team.

The U13 and U15 boys teams also made their finals but just failed to make the podium.

In the SAIL team finals the U13 girls again took a medal this time the silver. With Kirstin Penman and Shayna Asamoah gaining PBs in the long jump and shot putt respectively the team were off to a great start. Kirstin and Shayna also produced excellent performances in their 60m hurdles and 200m to build on their solid start.Aaliya Adebisi added points in the 60m with a PB and with Ellie Candlish producing 1.35m in the high jump assisted by Gracie Robertson with a PB in the 800m the team secured a silver medal just behind North Ayrshire AC.

The U13 boys also secured silver in their team finals. Callum Newton produced the goods in the hurdles and long jump and with Oliver Morrison also on form in the 200m and high jump the boys had a good hold during much of the competition. Jack Reid in the 60m, David Cuthbert in the 800m with their PBs and Brooke Ferguson in the shot putt all provided vital points and the team secured a joint second spot.

The other two DTF teams that made the finals competed admirably but just failed to make the medals. Special mentions in the U11 boys for PBs for Charlie Potter in the 60m and Bradley Moffat in the 600m. In the U15 girls Rebecca Grieve in the 60m and Hayley Penman in the 300m also secured PBs.

The full results are now on the TeamApp results page.

There were a remarkable 12 PBs out of the 26 events competed in by the DTF athletes so it’s fair to say the DTF athletes gave an outstanding performance. Well done all.
